B-MOVIE // NOWHERE GIRL 1981

McCABE & Ms MILLER (1971) – THE STRANGER SONG

McCABE1

Robert Altman‘s McCabe & Ms Miller opening sequence, set to Leonard Cohen‘s The Stranger Song.

Turn the sound off and you’ll probably be bored in less than 15 seconds. The sound was always a huge component of Altman’s cinema and this movie is famous for its seemingly messy sound mix. It’s as if you’re plunged into a cacophony of conversations, struggling to hear what’s being said (not in this opening which plays more like a minimalist music video), turning this film in what could best be described as a “reality western”, pierced now and then by flashes of Cohen’s elegiac score.

LUCKY THREE : AN ELLIOTT SMITH PORTRAIT (1997)

LUCKYTHREE1

Part short film and part music video, Lucky Three is, with another short film called Strange Parallels, one of the rare official videos of Elliott Smith.

Directed by Jem Cohen, it’s a kind of ancestor for the take-away shows.

Smith interprets three songs, alone in a room with an acoustic guitar (Between the Bars / Thirteen (a Big Star cover) / Angeles ), intercut with shots of his hometown Portland. The instrumental part in between the songs is from an early version of Baby Britain.

It was shot in 1997 but was only released two years later when it was included on Kill Rock Stars (his label at the time) first video fanzine which quickly came out of print.

This video was rediscovered when the version of Thirteen he sings here was used on the soundtrack of Mike MillsThumbsucker.

A documentary about him, Searching for Elliott Smith, has started making the rounds at festival but so far no trailer or release dates have been known.

CHRISTMAS ON MARS (2008) – TRAILER

For 5 years, Wayne Coyne, singer and spirit of The Flaming Lips, shot a science-fiction movie with some of his friends in his backyard. No budget. No script. No boundaries.

It took 3 more years to come out and in the meantime grew into something of a cult (which stands here for ‘not that easy to watch but with a killer soundtrack and some pretty trippy moments’).

Coyne has described the film as “Maybe Eraserhead or Dead Man crossed with some kind of fantasy and space aspects, like The Wizard of Oz and maybe A Space Odyssey, and set at Christmas-time. The story that unfolds is intended to hint at childlike magic within a tragic and realistic situation.

The trailer pretty much sums that up nicely as well…

GEOMETRY OF CIRCLES – PHILIP GLASS meets sesame street

capture001
